All the joints were cut with hand tools based on videos by Paul Sellers. The print is of Ichiro Suzuki which my brother did and gave to me. He is one of my favorite ballplayers. It is print #1.<br />

I replaced the headlight and recently did body work on the hood. The next thing I did was make a new grille as the original grille was patched together. I used the original grille and patched up empty spots with epoxy. I sprayed the grille and the 3D printed Subaru emblem with Plasti-Dip Black. Here is how it came out and for very little cost.<br />

Years ago when I played with my Dad, the best I ever shot was a 90. Yesterday, on August 3, 2019, I was able to shoot an 87 at Kresson Golf course in Voorhees, NJ. I was playing with my friend Boyd from church. Now I will have to change my goal to breaking 80.<br />

I don't know the cause. It was possibly the very wet year we have had so far but other blueberry farms in NJ seem to be fine. Maybe it is the blueberry species. This happened in 2017 also. It is disappointing since all the blueberries you can pick and carry out are free.<br />
I decided to go to a farm in Hammonton, NJ called Blueberry Bills. It was a bit expensive, but the berries were nice size and the farm was well kept. I picked 12.5 lbs of blueberries for $25.<br />

Our classroom education system is
expensive, ineffective and obsolete. When you step back and assess the
state of our education system from K through 12 and then college, it is
shocking that we are just accepting
it. Is it so big that there is nothing we can do about it? Are we
left with no choice in determining the best course for our children and
ourselves?
</div>
<div style="text-autospace: none;">
<s><span style="text-decoration: none;"><br /></span></s></div>
<div style="text-autospace: none;">
Education spending by the US government
is more than defense spending. Unlike defense contractors, where there
is at least companies that compete in cost for work, there is no
competition to get funding in the
education field. With no competition, there is no need to improve
processes or reduce costs. Costs keep going up and up each year with no
end in sight. In our digital, connected world, there is no reason for
this. If you are connected to the internet,
you can learn how to do almost anything. If you don’t have an internet
connection, you can learn at a local library. Unless you are aspiring
to be a surgeon or engineer, any subject or major is available to you
for free. There is no reason to still be stuck
in the age of our parents and grandparents when there was no access to
information with the exception of schools and libraries.</div>
<div style="text-autospace: none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-autospace: none;">
Families want to make sure they live in a
town that has a “good” school system. What does that mean in this day
and age where schools are mandated to teach the same curriculum? It is
the same classes teaching
subjects that the students will never put to practical use. Real life
skills, such as budgeting, money, finance, saving, home economics,
physical fitness, nutrition, gardening, computers, should be the main
focus of education but are sorely lacking. Instead
the students get classes on English, Spanish, calculus, trigonometry,
physics, chemistry, history that they will never use again. If for some
reason the student do need that information, they can learn it when
they need it. It is high time that the learn,
test, and forget method be replaced. </div>
<div style="text-autospace: none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-autospace: none;">
College education is forced upon young
teenagers who don’t know any better as their ticket to employment.
Parents keep sending their children to colleges and universities because
it is what they did. The reality
is that most are paying enormous tuition costs for information that is
essentially free. They become saddled in debt that they may never pay
back but which they can never get out of. The kids come out of college
or high school 2.0 with no skills for all
the time and money they put out. The colleges are not held accountable
for the poor product they are offering. It is amazing how the
perception of college education is so engrained that families and
students continue to willingly pay for it and it has no
value unless you are going to medicine or engineering school. The
colleges keep raising the tuition bar higher and higher without any
improvements on their part and it is never questioned. Students and
families need to say no more. People need to demand
a change to receive some value in return for their money. Like any
other expense, there should be a money back guarantee for satisfaction.
Why do schools just get a free pass on this? There are so many
opportunities in the digital age. The crop of new
workers that colleges are putting out are not prepared for the skills
that are in demand by employers today. The fact is most of today’s
office jobs do not need a college level education. Digital technology,
computer work, spreadsheets, presentations, problem
solving, etc can all be learned at no cost, online. </div>
<div style="text-autospace: none;">
The jobs that require in school training
are in the trades where students can learn “hands on”. Welding,
plumbing, carpentry, auto mechanics, auto body, electrician work are all
skills that are in demand that
don’t require 4 years of training. Medical school and engineering are really the only courses of study that require college based learning. </div>
<div style="text-autospace: none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-autospace: none;">
Education can progress toward providing
value to students, families and the country. The education industry can
adapt just like other industries have had to adapt through the
revolution of the digital age.
Disruption to the status quo will be painful, but think of how much
farther our country will advance when the outdated teaching methods give
way to a whole new digital paradigm. Education will need to start
being innovative just like any other industry.
The benefit to the whole will be enormous when we become free thinkers
and learners.</div>

I made the handle out of a 1.25" dowel that I planed to 8 sides then turned on my mini lathe. I made the ferrule from a brass fitting and the square awl from a 3.5" hardened masonry nail. I first annealed the nail, then shaped it with files and sandpaper. I then hardened by heating to non-magnetic orange stage then with oil quenching. I tempered at 400F in a toaster oven. To get the name like Paul had on
his handle, I just laser printed out my name in mirror image then placed
on a wetted side with clear waterbased polyurethane. I let dry then
put water on it and lightly rubbed the paper off leaving the name.<br />

I got started with a model of the boat "Wave" which I purchased plans from the WoodenBoat store. It is the first picture shown in this series. I also got some good tips from Douglas Brooks' <a href="http://amateurboatbuilding.com/articles/howto/half_model/index.html" target="_blank">tutorial.</a> I really like his idea when gluing up the wood to include a colored piece of construction paper for the waterline. It seems too thin but it shows up just perfect.<br />
I also found a great <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG5S_C8tRxm21FM0AHhvSvA/videos" target="_blank">video series</a> on YouTube where Malcolm Crosby (from the Crosby catboat family of boatbuilders in Osterville, Cape Cod) builds half hull models. Betsy Crosby Thompson has put together great videos of her father building these models. This is a real treasure as his model are exquisite and he provides all kinds of tips and details how he does it. Every part of the process is shown too.<br />
I am currently working on a John Blanchard Adirondack guideboat where I purchased the plans from Mystic Seaport. I really like making models of small craft rather than the large yachts <br />

<ul>
<li>Even the best teams will lose 70
out of the 162 scheduled games in a season</li>
<li>The best of the best players will
fail to get a hit 70% of the time</li>
<li>Take it one pitch at a time, one
inning at a time.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Don’t dwell on yesterday
except to learn from it.</li>
<li>“It ain’t over til its over”
(Yogi Berra) – anything can happen even if you are down in the ninth inning
with 2 strikes and 2 outs.</li>
<li>Run everything out as hard as
you can. Joe DiMaggio said, “There is
always some kid who may be seeing me play for the first time. I owe him my best”.</li>
<li>You don’t always need the home
run.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Lots of singles and walks can add
up runs quickly.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></li>
<li>Be patient and wait for
something you can hit</li>
<li>Keep your eye on the ball (the
process, the goal, etc.)</li>
<li>Even if you are on the bench, be
ready to go in at any time. </li>
<li>Take a
moment to relax and refresh (7th inning stretch).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Rushing a play can lead to errors.</li>
<li>Slumps don’t
last forever and neither do hot streaks.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Consistency over the long term is key.</li>
<li>You may not
always get calls in your favor (umpire calls).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>You will get calls that balance that out over time.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Focus on what you can control.</li>

Any football fan has to appreciate what
the Philadelphia Eagles did to win Super Bowl VII. They had several
injuries to key players but just kept on winning. There were no
stand out superstars that distracted from the team purpose. I do
believe Doug Pederson's statement that this winning is a new norm for
the team. As long as they continue to keep humble and stay focused
as a team, I don't see why they could not continue. We'll have to
see if the play style of Carson Wentz will be able to keep him
healthy for an entire season.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The team became likable and it seems
that the city could overcome the bad events of the past like throwing
snowballs at Santa Claus and cheering when Michael Irvin was hit so
hard he was not moving on the field. Just when you thought that
could be turned around, you get Jason Kelce's parade celebration
speech which was completely out of line especially when he used
profanity in front of a crowd full of families. Then on top of that,
the crowd is cheering him on and later writing that his speech was
spectacular. Really? I may be the only one that did not like his
speech at all.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Doesn't Kelce know that by winning the
super bowl, you silence all of the critics? You no longer have to
moan and complain how the media made it so hard for you to succeed
because it was the exact opposite. Instead of “F-em!” and
“F-you!” why not take the high road and say “To all the
critics, Thank you, because it gave us even more incentive to prove
everyone wrong”? You just won a championship. Act like you are a
champion and not some drunken buffoon. Instead, here he was, dressed up in full Mummer
costume and made himself stand out from all the other teammates. He
wanted all of the spotlight and was so unlike the character of this
Eagles team. Lead by quiet selfless players like Carson Wentz, Nick
Foles, Brandon Graham, the team is group of players that pull for
each other without the superstar diva special treatment that plagues
so many teams now. Even very outspoken players like Malcom Jenkins
gave a short speech, then retreated back behind the curtain of the
team. Kelce was the only one that had to make a spectacle of
himself. I am sure the team and the NFL had to cringe at his foul
language but kept smiles on their faces because there was nothing
they could do.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Just because it was a super bowl
championship celebration and he had a platform did not excuse it. I
am hopeful that after the euphoria of the championship wears down
some that people will rethink his speech and demand from the NFL, the
team and owners that we don't hear that kind of thing again.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
If Kelce is not fined and reprimanded
for not following the rules then speeches like this will become the
“new norm” and that is sad. In an NFL season that was full of
controversy, the Eagles helped to save the season by authoring an
epic “Underdog” story that every fan can relate to and hope for.
Yet Kelce ruined it for many NFL fans in 5 minutes and added to the
poor image of the Philadelphia fan base. This is an opportunity for
the NFL to step in and put a stop to this kind of thing that does
nothing to uplift the image that so many good players work hard to
maintain.</div>

The retired numbers and plaques are getting so silly now with the Yankees that here is what will be coming in a few years:</div>
<div>
<b>Plaques:</b></div>
<ul>
<li>John Sterling</li>
<li>Suzyn Waldman</li>
<li>Michael Kay</li>
<li>Brian Cashman</li>
<li>Mike Francessa</li>
</ul>
<div>
<b>Retired numbers coming:</b></div>
<ul>
<li>Joe Girardi</li>
<li>Paul O'Neill</li>
<li>Mark Texiera</li>
<li>Alex Rodriguez</li>
<li>CC Sabathia</li>
<li>Scott Brosius</li>
<li>Hideki Matsui - first Japanese Yankee to be honored</li>
</ul>
<div>
It's ridiculous and the Yankees should say after Jeter, there will be NO MORE retired numbers again.</div>
<div>
The team is bigger than whoever happens to be wearing the uniform at any given time.</div>
<div>
A
retired number should only go to the players who were so outstanding
and one of a kind immortal that there will never be one like that again.</div>
<div>
While these players below were absolutely great and fan favorites they are not in that category in my opinion:</div>
<ul>
<li>#1 Billy Martin </li>
<li>#6 Joe Torre </li>
<li>#10 Phil Rizzuto</li>
<li>#20 Jorge Posada</li>
<li>#23 Don Mattingly</li>
<li>#32 Elston Howard</li>
<li>#44 Reggie Jackson</li>
<li>#46 Andy Petitte</li>
<li>#49 Ron Guidry</li>
<li>#51 Bernie Williams</li>
</ul>
<div>
These players had wonderful careers but we will likely see more like them in the future. </div>
<div>
It
cheapens the distinction when all these players get retired numbers
when they are no where near the stature of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMagggio,
Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra....</div>
The exceptions to this
for the modern guys are Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter. There is no way we will ever
see players like these 2 again so they qualify.Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10050043022291386365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-848594254380015129.post-58922239917138137742017-09-06T03:30:00.004-07:002017-09-06T03:33:21.799-07:00Recycled Recumbent Bike ProjectI vowed after bike riding in the 2017 Bike-A-Thon and Tour de Shore events (Philadelphia to Atlantic City) that next year I would not do 5 hours on an upright bike for 65 miles again. I test rode a few recumbent bicycles in early August and really liked them however the cost for one is around $1800+. So of course I decided to try making one. I found some good plans from AD Carlson of <a href="https://sites.google.com/site/recycledrecumbents/home" target="_blank">Recycled Recumbents</a>. This is the Mach 1 design and he shares all his plans for free. I have about 60 miles on the bike now and it is very comfortable. I really love it. I learned some new skills with this project including arc and mig welding. I also did some brazing.<br />

I tried to make it all out of cherry, but the bottom and top pieces warped. I wound up making the sides out of cherry and the top and bottom out of clear pine.<br />

It is this. As a country, we have glorified the value of a college degree which has put young people into $1 trillion in student debt loans and does not really leave them with much more employable skills than when they left high school. Meanwhile, there are 3 million, good paying trade jobs that go unfilled because there are less and less people available with the skills to do them. These jobs do not require a 4 year degree but do require some sort of meaningful skill training. He calls this "The Skills Gap".<br />
<br />
I realize I have to approach the subject cautiously, since Mike Rowe is backed by Caterpillar, Direct Energy and other corporate sponsors who know it is in their best interest to throw the best light they can on work that they desperately need labor for. Mike Rowe is the lead recruiter and a very effective communicator. <br />
<br />
I would agree that are many myths about trade jobs or jobs labeled "blue collar". If I were starting again, I would definitely learn a trade like welding, plumbing, Heating-Ventilation-Air conditioning (HVAC) or electrical wiring. You go where the opportunity is and right now, opportunities are in the trades. Why? These jobs require work to be done that cannot be outsourced. Opportunities to branch off and start your own business are there for those with that drive. Americans love indoor plumbing, temperature controlled environments, smooth roads and electrical power. There has to be someone who knows how to build, maintain and repair the infrastructure that provides everyone with what we take for granted. You can pretty much relocate to any state and be in demand, assuming you are good at what you do and have a professional work ethic. <br />
<br />
It is supply and demand too. High demand jobs with a small pool of skilled labor drives wages for that skill higher. Likewise, low demand jobs with large pool of people drive wages lower. Each year, more white collar type work is going away due to automation. Even high prestige work like engineering can be outsourced to a low bid overseas worker via email, Solidworks and Skype. I have often heard it said that white collars workers are "screwed" for future career opportunities.<br />
<br />
Are students really learning anything of value anymore in college? College professors need to "publish or perish" so they need to be involved in research where they are likely to become inaccessible to their students. Meanwhile, students are taught by the professor's graduate assistants or adjunct part time professors. Also, professors are now rated online by students which means the professors that are easy and less demanding will get the highest scores. This is what a student pays $120,000 for and which is projected to double that amount in 5 to 10 years? I cannot see this lasting for very much longer. There is a need for education reform more than ever.<br />
<br />
Education in a school building is one of the only industries where there has been ZERO productivity gains over the last 100 years. A teacher teaches a class of students the same way they did 75 years ago yet gets paid more. That does not make sense and it not sustainable. <br />
<br />
It comes back to this - enormous amounts of money is borrowed for students to go to college with no hope of paying it back so they get a degree for a job that no longer exists. This is the "Skills Gap" Mike Rowe is talking about and and I agree we need to address the whole topic of education, training and skill building. <br />
<br />
"Learn a skill, get really good at it and work your ass off" is sound career advice even if Mike Rowe is paid to say it.<br />
<br />
Mike Rowe's message on not following your passion, but bringing your passion with you is worth a look:<br />

They are very easy once you get a nice sharp gouge. That is the secret. The curved hook knives don't cut very well when I see demonstrated. They do cut, but it seems to take a very long time with the little cuts here and there.<br />
Paul Sellers has a <a href="https://youtu.be/krAIHRCx9R0" target="_blank">YouTube video</a> on making wooden spoons. He <a href="https://paulsellers.com/2013/04/hook-knives-hand-scorps-and-gouges/" target="_blank">recommends</a> the Hirsch #7, 35mm gouge for spoonmaking. I decided to get one. Although it is not cheap at $50, it is a lifetime tool that I can pass along for many generations.<br />
Here are spoons that I recently made. The large spoon was made from an antique pine board that was passed down from my grandfather and the second was from cherry. They are actually very easy to make. A sharp spokeshave makes the shaping work quick also. It only takes about 5 minutes or so to carve out the bowl with the Hirsch gouge. It is a great tool. It takes no more than an hour to make and you have something really nice for the kitchen or a gift for someone. The finish is mineral oil.<br />

For some reason, it really interested me so I ordered it on Amazon. I had been looking a different pocket knifes but he recommended carving with the small knife on a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Swiss-Tinker-Pocket-Knife/dp/B00004YVB4/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1488020030&sr=8-1&keywords=victorinox+tinker" target="_blank">Victorinox Tinker Swiss Army knife</a>. For around $18, it is a bargain. Victorinox knives are very high quality. I really love them. I did get the book and I found out Chris holds carving workshops at his home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the wintertime. I checked his <a href="http://www.whittlingwithchris.com/" target="_blank">website</a>, and about 1.5 weeks later I went to one he had scheduled. I got the last open seat.<br />
Chris is a real inspiration. His workshop class was excellent. I learned the proper way to sharpen a carving knife and whittle a wood knife, rooster, flowers and an owl. He also is very entertaining with stories, and showing little items he has gathered over the years. He even demonstrated his large slingshot on top of his van. He shot an apple about 350 feet. Carving is a great pastime since it is very low cost. You can find free twigs and branches almost anywhere. You can make a leather strop from an old belt.<br />
The first picture shows some of Chris' roosters. The second picture is a rooster he carved in class that I won. The third picture is his large slingshot. <br />

Ideally, it would be nice to get wifi and hear music from the computer but inside the garage does not get my wifi signal. I will have to run a cable out there sometime. Since I already had some nice speakers, I decided to just get an inexpensive car stereo and pair it with an old computer power supply. Then I made a dovetailed box out of pine and put it up on a shelf I made. <br />

It is a saw blade that can be resharpened too. He demonstrated how well it cut versus some other low cost handsaws. I decided to try it out. It is 12 teeth per inch and I sharpened the teeth to a rip cut profile. He was right, it was terrific! What a great deal for $11! With care, this will last for a very long time because it can always be resharpened. The only thing I did not care for was the plastic handle so I made a wood one.<br />
I got a pattern for a Disston miterbox saw handle from <a href="http://www.tgiag.com/saw-handle-scans.html" target="_blank">tgia</a>. Here is the result:<br />

For many years now, I had thought about building a guitar, but never took action on it. With a ukelele, the project seemed less intimidating. I decided to do it starting in November 2016. I had a nice piece of close grained redwood for the top which I was able to quarter saw into nice bookmatched panels. I used walnut for the sides where I glued to thin laminations. Cherry was used for the neck and walnut for the fingerboard. It was a fun project and I am glad I did it. It is quite an art to build a nice sounding instrument though. With all the work to build a ukelele from scratch, it did not compare as well in sound as a Makala Dolphin ukelele I bought for under $50. I am not sure if I will build a guitar now, but I would not rule it out. I have construction photos of the whole ukelele build <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/12134951@N08/albums/72157678866292221" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

He had lots of cabinets that he has made over the years and they looked great. He was selling a book on how he did it and I really liked his style so I purchased it. <br />
<a href="http://www.tomclarkbooks.com/Practical_Shop_Cabinets.html" target="_blank">Practical Shop Cabinets</a><br />
Since I got the book, I have built two bench cabinets. One is 10 drawers and the other is 8. The first one took me about 30 hours over 14 days at about $80. It has a 3/4" plywood top. The second one I just finished in about 24 hours over 8 days for about the same cost. I had built a Ron Paulk style workbench which I cut down and used for the top on this cabinet. I must say these cabinets are rock solid and should last a long time. It is nice to have lots of space for organized storage where things have a home. I also fixed up an old small 2 drawer dresser and replaced it with 4 brand new drawers with drawer slides. It used to have drawers that just slid in on wood rails. I painted it black and left the drawer fronts natural. I just used polyurethane satin for the finish on the red oak plywood. The 8 drawer cabinet was finished with boiled linseed oil, then 1 coat of satin poly and it looks a bit better than the straight poly.<br />
I made the wooden drawer handles out of bits of cherry and maple. Some were cut by my cnc machine but most were cut out on the bandsaw. The handle design is from <a href="http://woodgears.ca/drawers/handles.html" target="_blank">Matthias Wandel</a> and the ones on the 4 drawer unit are designed by <a href="http://www.ibuildit.ca/Woodworking%20Projects/wooden-handles-1.html" target="_blank">John Heisz</a>. These handles are much more solid than what you can buy.<br />

I went to Martin Guitars in Nazareth, PA on 9/30/2016 for a factory tour. Martin offers daily plant tours so I was excited to get a chance to see how their guitars are made. CF Martin started in 1833. Once you enter the lobby of Martin Guitars there are lots of
things to see while you wait for the tour to start. There is a museum on the left which
beautifully showcases the history of the company back to its start in
1833. There are guitars there that are
180+ years old! You could spend a long time in this museum as it is as high
quality as any museum you will visit. There is also a gift shop and a guitar playing area where
you can actually play several Martin’s hanging on the wall.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The tour starts with a tour guide handing out wireless
earphones so you get to hear every word during the tour. This is a great idea! They are set up for daily tours and have it
down to a science. There are display
boards everywhere in the factory showing what the workcell does and what the
equipment does. There are many cnc
machines and robotic equipment but there still is lots of work that is hand
done by craftspeople. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

There are about 600 employees in this 200,000 square foot
facility. It is a marvel that this company
has survived all these years. It is a
privately owned company and the Martin family is now in its 6th
generation. For anyone who is a
woodworker or guitar player or both, this factory tour is really a special
treat. Even if you are not either, it is
still one of the best plant tours you will see.
It is really interesting how the factory and walking tour are set up to
showcase the employees and product.
There was careful thought to not make just a factory to build guitars
but to market the high quality of the Martin product right in the factory
itself. When you are walking through and
seeing the many different styles of guitars in process, you definitely want
one! It is really clever how this was
thought out and something you will not see in other factories. After the tour you receive a laser engraved sound hole cut out.</div>

I did use a circular saw to rip cut 72" piece off a board of cherry for the edging. The squares are 1/4" thick and thickness planed by hand using a #4 plane. I was amazed at the precision you can get with a shooting board, hand planes, and a sharp tenon rip saw. This was a great learning process for me and I really like how it turned out. The finish is 3 coats of shellac, 2 coats boiled linseed oil/lemon oil/helmsman varnish/mineral spirits mix, then finished off with furniture wax. I used cherry and curly maple for the squares, cherry for the edge pieces and ash for the dovetail splines at each corner<br />

I have been making hand cut dovetail boxes over the past 2 months. My goal is to practice making 100 dovetail corners, so that would amount to 25 boxes. I have 7 various boxes made so far, but I am gaining more confidence with my dovetail saw, chisel and hand plane skills. No routers, jigs or templates used. It is amazing what you can do with some sharp hand tools. In many instances it is faster and much safer than machines. No loud noise, kickbacks or dust collection. I can do at any time also and not bother my neighbors. </div>
